Not Just a Knitting Store

If you’re a knitter (or non-knitter) who’s ever thought of branching out in new directions, we’ve got plenty of options coming up in the next few months. Needle-felting is great fun and needs no experience. In our Sculpting With Felting Needles class, February 9, we’ll teach you how to make small objects like animals and flowers with unspun yarn and a needle. The options are endless! If you’ve ever wanted to weave but were leery of huge looms, we can teach you on one of our 10- or 15-inch Cricket looms. A full-day introductory class is coming up on Feb. 22. For aspiring spinners, we have a group that meets every first Friday of the month. We also offer drop-spindling classes (the next one in March), and have lovely, portable Sidekick wheels for purchase. We also teach crochet, needlepoint and more. Check our classes page for more details, and widen your fiber...

Ravi’s Construction, an Overview

Ravi’s Construction, an Overview

Our Ravi Knitalong starts this Sunday, September 15 at 4. What makes Ravi such an interesting sweater and fun knit is its unusual construction. Let’s walk through it. Ravi begins with the yoke which is knit from side to side. The yoke is made from wedges knit from the neckline to the bottom of the openwork pattern and is shaped using short rows. So each wedge begins with the full length of the yoke then is knit back and forth on fewer and fewer stitches. When enough wedges have been knit to complete the full yoke, stitches are picked up along the bottom and the body is knit in garter stitch. The sleeves are separated, like a typical top-down sweater, and knit in the round down as well. This allows the knitter to decide on how long to make the sleeves and the body of the sweater. You can try it on as you go to find the length that you prefer. The lower back hem is given a lovely, flattering curve with short rows as well. The body and the sleeves both end with an i-cord bind off. It creates a beautifully finished edge. Don’t be scared if you have never knit short rows before. They are simple to do and allow for lots of wonderful shaping in your knitting. Carol Feller, the designer of Ravi, teaches an excellent free class online class on short rows. And she’s wearing Ravi in the video too!  We look forward to seeing you at the Ravi Knitalong Kickoff this...

Fall Knitalong Announced

Fall Knitalong Announced

Our knitalong this fall will feature a flattering and unusual sweater designed by Carol Feller of Stolen Stitches.   Ravi has interesting construction, with a yoke that’s knit sideways and shaped to fit with short rows. The rest of the sweater is then picked up and knit downwards.   It features a hem that curves lower in back, also created with short rows, and is finished with i-cord. The sleeves are three-quarter length.   Ravi can be knit in sport- or DK-weight yarn.   As usual we’ll kick off our knitalong with a party on September 15. Join us for door prizes and fun (or if  you can’t make the party, cast on by yourself). The full knitalong schedule is listed...
